National Labor College
Located in Silver Spring, Maryland, the National Labor College is a private co-educational labor college, and the only regionally accredited higher education institution exclusively for educating union members and families. The National Labor College was founded in 1969 by the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) as its training center. The college was granted accreditation in March 2004 by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.
As of 2012, the National Labor College is in the process of selling its property. Most of the degree programs and courses offered at the college are now fully online. Students are able to access and complete their coursework at home or any other location with Internet access. Bachelor degrees offered include programs in Business Administration, Construction Management, Emergency Readiness and Response Management, Labor Education, Labor Studies, Union Leadership and Administration, Labor Safety and Health, and more.
The National Labor College also offers an online Associate of Arts Degree that is designed to provide a solid foundation for bachelor degree programs either at NLC or another 4-year college or university. Academic disciplines in American history, humanities and arts, social and behavioral sciences, natural sciences, and mathematics.
Meanwhile, specialized certificate programs offered at National Labor College include Arbitration and Grievance Handling, Building Trades Organizational Dynamics and Growth, Union Leadership and Administration, Labor Education Leadership for Change, Union Administration, Emergency Management, Ethical Management, Small Business Management, and many more.
National Labor College has several Graduate Study programs in cooperation with other universities. Areas of study include organization development, public administration, union leadership, legal and ethical studies, and more. Currently, the Masters of Science in Organization Developent and Knowledge Management program is a partnership with George Mason University, while the Master's Degree in Union Leadership and Administration is a collaboration with University of Massachusetts.
In order to make the process of higher education more effective for students, National Labor College provides different support services particularly in the area of academic advising. Every applicant to NLC is assigned an Admissions Counselor that assists in the process and the requirements. Meanwhile, Academic Advisors are also available to help students establish a degree completion plan and monitor their progress towards finishing their degree. For guidance in their particular area of study, Faculty Advisors are available to work with students in their coursework as well as provide career guidance and professional development. Most advising sessions are done over the phone or online, but face-to-face sessions are also available by appointment.
National Labor College has an online bookstore with a full range of services for students, faculty, and administration members. The National Labor College Virtual Bookstore offers options for students to order needed textbooks, or sell textbooks they no longer need. Required and recommended textbooks for students are available in different formats, including new, used, for rental, or digital/e-book. There are also general reading books in various categories that can be ordered from the Virtual Bookstore, including popular new releases and bestsellers in categories such as Business and Economics, Health and Wellness, Religion, Social Science, Medical, Performing Arts, and more.
